The individual selected will be responsible for performing preventive maintenance and repairs on all vehicles, other rolling stock, and non-rolling equipment in the city's fleet; to maintain records of repairs performed; and to oversee contract engine repair work; assist with complex and difficult repairs on equipment in the city's fleet. Qualifications are the ability to operate a variety of mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner; accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate the cost and time of repairs; use a variety of equipment maintenance tools and equipment; maintain a variety of shop and repair records; read and understand various manuals, blueprints, and schematics; independently perform mechanic work including diagnosing, troubleshooting, fabricating, and repair of equipment; read and interpret factory specification and part books; interpret and explain City policies and procedures; prepare clear and concise reports; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Two years of automotive/mechanical repair experience. Training equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by formal specialized training in automotive/mechanical repair or a related field.
